CHALLENGE The dormitory of the "Association to protect the guild practices in construction e. V." had utilization problems for a long time. These were caused by the outdated concept of the migratory capacity of crafts journeymen and led into bankruptcy. The financial authority of the association saw the urgency of developing a concept for the further exploitation of the property and asked the Lawaetz Foundation to develop a sustainable concept. A special challenge was the search for a solution of the structure of ownership: The house is the property of the association and the site is owned by the City of Hamburg.
AIM OF THE PROJECT The following paragraph from the website of the umbrella cooperative „Wohnreform“ (housing reform) reflects the philosophy of the project „StattSchloss”: "Everyone who becomes member can find like-minded people and a community house founded with the intention to live together, alone, in pairs, multicultural, in a shared flat or with the family in a bigger apartment, with or without disabilities, single parents, heterosexual, homosexual, young and old, with more and less money, or just simply different. The idea for the future is: A vibrant economy creates neighbourhood only through communication and joint actions. Garden, terrace, garage, a large community room for gatherings and celebrations will offer space and opportunities." The cooperating Lutheran Foundation Alsterdorf (Evangelische Stiftung Alsterdorf ESA) as clerical centre of excellence is pursuing for several years the objective to finalize the concept of closed residential care of disabled people on the Foundation ground and place them in different areas of the city. Here a lack of adequate facilities is given. The housing group “StattSchloss” by contrast joins the philosophy of integrating non-disabled and disabled people in the neighbourhood.
DESCRIPTION This is why the inter-generational housing project “StattSchloss” was developed and constructed. It offers space for 25 disabled and 51 non-disabled people to live collectively. The building was considerably extended, got an elevator, barrier-free entrances and common areas. It was a credit by the public Hamburg Wohnungsbaukreditanstalt (WK) which enabled a modernisation up to the level of a new building. Actually eleven children and two teenagers are living there.
Actor / Lead Management / Cooperation The Johann Daniel Lawaetz-Foundation held the lead management of the project. It was realised in cooperation with the Lutheran Foundation Alsterdorf (ESA - Evangelische Stiftung Alterdorf) and Wohnreform e.G.
