CHALLENGE Redevelopment of the old Trefkoel site AIM OF THE PROJECT Realising the new heart of the residential care zone in the Paddepoel district DESCRIPTION In the past, the neighbourhood centre "De Trefkoel" was located opposite the shopping centre in the post-war Paddestoel housing district. This neighbourhood centre lost its functions years ago, and it is now very outdated. A few years ago it was decided to demolish it and to use the site for the construction of a large number of apartments for elderly people, including the associated service provisions in the building's plinth, such as (para)medical services and other services for the elderly. An urban planning scheme has now been drawn up for the redevelopment of this location, including two blocks on the Trefkoel site flanking a through-route to the estate lying behind it. The northern block will have a high feature (around 70m in height) on the corner of the Eikenlaan and the Zonnelaan, and both blocks will be developed to a height of six or seven storeys. The urban planning scheme does not just deal with the Trefkoel site, but also the area south of that, along the Zonnelaan right up to the corner with the Pleiadenlaan, in the same set-up with six or seven storeys. This last element of the urban planning scheme will be developed at a later stage. For the development of both blocks into the real heart of the Paddepoel residential care zone, the programme outline looks as follows: • Service provision for elderly people within the plinth of both blocks along the Zonnelaan. • Around 210 apartments, divided over both blocks, which will partly be developed for senior residents not (yet) requiring care, partly for senior residents requiring a lighter form of care, and partly for senior residents requiring more heavy care. • In addition to this, both in block 1 (the northern block) and in block 2 (the southern block) a number of care units will be developed for the benefit of people needing really heavy care, including the associated nursing care. • Eventually some 240 parking spaces will be realised within the building, for residents and service providers working on this site. It is also intended that activities are organised within the living area of the complex for residents of the new accommodation, to ensure that people will not become lonely and can stay fit and active.
