INITIAL POSITION / CHALLENGE
Elderly people want to stay in their own house for as long as possible, even if the caring need increases. Therefore, they appeal to home carers, cleaning services etc. These home care services are aware of the fact that some housing situations have problems concerning safety (unsafe electricity, loose floor covering ...), accessibility (difference in level, stairs ...) and comfort (no toilet inside, no bathroom, no hot water). That’s the reason why the initiative “Steunpunt Woningaanpassing” was erected. An expert will lead the elderly through the entire adaptation procedure.

AIM OF THE PROJECT
“Steunpunt Woningaanpassing” wants to improve the comfort, accessibility and safety of the houses of the client (elderly and disabled persons).

DESCRIPTION
To realise the aim of the project, it was essential to inform the home carers and social workers about the possibilities. In a second phase, home carers bring their clients in contact with the project officer. The service towards the client includes:
• Investigation of the needs, screening of the housing quality
• Advice concerning possible adaptations, investigation of the technical feasibility
• Plan drawing
• Search for contractors (proposal and execution)
• Advice concerning materials – follow-up of the constructions
• Help with premium application

Examples of adaptations:
• Indoor toilet
• Stair lift
• Adaptation of door width
• Installation of supports
• Adjustment of cupboards
• Installation of central heating
• Installation of door speaker phone

FINANCING
The service towards the clients is free of charge. The executed work should be paid to the contractor/ handyman and/or the supplier of materials. Some people are entitled to a premium but that depends on some criteria. The project receives 40.000 euro financial support per year from the Province of West-Flanders.

EXPERIENCE
Home care services made it possible that the project took off quickly. Good information, advice, financial support and intensive guidance are essential to create a successful project. So far, 220 households received help, and more applications come in every day.

ACTOR / LEAD MANAGEMENT
care and welfare organisation Landelijke Thuiszorg vzw

SUBSIDY / ADVICE
“Landelijke Thuiszorg” receives subsidies (40.000 euro per year) from the Province of West-Flanders, and pays the rest herself.
